We like him because despite the shortcomings of his rule (corruption, a lot of yes men of questionable qualification in the government that pass some equally questionable laws), a lot of good things were still done to improve the quality of life, and not just in Moscow. Without turning the country into another lapdog for the americans, which does boost the pride of the russian people.

Except that in USA opposition is not killed and once in a while different political party takes power, which you can't say about russia where the same political party stays in power for 30+ years and if you dare to have different option than putins party you are killed or imprisoned
