When I graduated in early '90s, it is still possible, with a good degree, to afford a private house and a car if you start from zero. Let's just say that it is impossible, or incredibly hard, to do so now.

We actually still have the same kind of issues here in Germany, which most people would say is a really rich country. The income gap can be pretty insane. Generational wealth and opportunities through your family's standing on the social ladder, or nepotism are absolutely a thing. It's not an easy thing to solve. Just getting richer on average as a country won't solve it.
More social security nets are working pretty well but if not done right can also just have a bandaid effect instead. Minimum wages are very important. As well as then forbidding employers to hire cheap foreigners, or outsourcing their production to cheaper countries. Otherwise it'll just be a global domino effect of wealthy people hiring the cheapest worker, making the local worker go jobless in their field of expertise,
and braindrain for the poorer country by taking their skilled workers away, as well as making your own native population poorer on the low end. If employers hire a foreigner they should always earn the exact same, and have the same insurance etc. as a native worker, and on the more extreme end, maybe even have the employer face a tariff for hiring from outside.

What a stupid world we live in ,everything is about money in this life ,simple things like having a house and buy food should not be unaffordable , life is not about performing all the time we need to build another model because all of these have no meaning .

Well if you take away modern technology and go back to Stone Age, you still have to hunt to survive and putting your life at risk. So the world we live in now isn’t that bad. To be honest.

bro.. many people will trade their life with yours. if you want a simpler life, there is always Indonesia. You can simply marry local there and spend the rest of your life with saving you got from first world.
however.. everything there will be disfunctional, I know you all singaporeans are very ungretful and like to complain. There you are lucky if you can think and complain

Other than accommodation, Singapore is pretty affordable to live in. Hawker is generally very cheap. There's nowhere in 1st world country where u can find a full meal that is within 5 dollars.

One of the reasons why hawkers are able to sell cheap is because they don't even change their cooking oil for a week or so. You may be able to save now but then spend a lot on insurance or expensive healthcare later on in life.

With 5 dollars, you will be able to enjoy a meal filled with either rice, noodles or flour N a few strands of meat mostly. Causing nutritional deficiencies in a long run.

Please don't compare Singapore to Japan. The Japanese are a largely unified community well-known for taking care of each other, whether economic or natural disaster. Singapore is 1) every man for himself 2) no welfare state, no free lunches 3) "if you don't work hard, you deserve to be a garbage collector"
4) Ministers award themselves high salaries because otherwise they won't do the job - meanwhile, there is no national minimum wage. No amount of money made by Singapore or Singaporeans can buy the good social graces or community spirit of Japan.
It is an illusion perpetrated by the Singapore government to make Singapore look desirable to the rich and to attract foreign talent and wealth. The government claims this will "help create jobs for Singaporeans". Half the country is foreigners, and the government actively replaces Singaporeans with "new citizens". Singaporeans are punished every year with increasing cost of living, in a country well known for having high income inequality. Singapore is rich, but not Singaporeans.

the deflation and collapse of their economy was due to wrong decisions that were made in the 1980s like increasing the value of Japanese yen. The world and US in particular ended up purchasing less of Japanese goods and this caused the collapse.
While this is dissimilar to the current Singapore state, we are approaching to something similar because we are becoming more and more expensive in everything. Less and less will want to invest in Singapore cos it is costly to do so

Actually, you're wrong. The average Singaporean is pretty wealthy. It's just that you have grown accustomed to it. Try living in one of our neighbouring countries on their local wage. Also, Japan is heavily romanticised. The working culture the will suck your soul, and for very low pay.

I do not think that the average singaporean is very wealthy. Majority are middle-class average persons. That does not mean wealthy. There are reports that the proportion of our own savings have decreased, due to having need to pay for increased costs of living.

This certainly does not spell wealthy. You mention Japan's working culture. I deliberately did not mention this in my first comment post. Sg's working culture is VERY VERY similar to japan now, and people are getting off work later and later. If you board the MRT daily at night you will seee what i mean.

Singapore is expensive only the rental and perhaps owning a car. Other than that, its still ok, its up to the choices u make. Compared to malaysia 1 bubble tea cost about 15rm. imagine making 2000RM per month. how to afford bubble tea. where as in SG, only $3.50. I think only the private housing and cost of owning a car in SG is expensive. other than that, still ok.

Even though there are new opportunities for the current generation, it does not mean that everyone can grab it. Back in the old days, they can buy a food at a lower price. But now the prices of food are soaring. The prices of rent in Singapore is on average $1000 per month at least. Plus now they are so many tech layoffs and other companies are willing to layoff which means some careers are not that secure as it seems. Back in the old days, everyone can have a secure job very easily.

Singaporeans usually don't need to rent though and HDB flats aren't actually that expensive because the buyer's CPF will usually offset the HDB loan repayment. All of my friends have their own HDB flat. It's only expensive if you want buying resale flats or private property.

Income equality is an impossible task to tackle. The economics of the world dictates that asset prices rise over time. In many cases it has been rising very rapidly over the last few years. So if you don’t own any assets, you will find it increasingly difficult to catch up.
