The video glosses over why taxes are high while public service standards are so low; where did all that money go? Who's responsible for the bad spending?

The UK Labour Party reduced NHS waiting times every year to the lowest levels while immigration was rising every year. Immigration isn't the problem the Conservative Party and austerity is. The vast wealth from immigration wasn't taxed & allowed to go into the hands of the wealthy elite. That's why we need wealth taxes on multimillionaires and billionaires.

Nothing to do with Brexit. UK is not a dependent country on Europe. Bad policy led to this.

It's weird to me that US/UK are far away from Ukraine, but somehow support Ukraine relentlessly. What is the motive here? (hint: break up Europe mainland)

Since Thatcher the UK has decided that they can be an only service economy. They also bend over backwards for insanely wealthy people. Turns out that doesn't work.

"Bend over for wealthy people" Lol, it's always been like that with the social class system in UK. People are "obsessed" with class

If the UK does invest heavily in certain industries, I highly suspect that money is just going to over paid managers

The UK is abnormal in that financial occupies a disproportionate share of the nation's economy, ESPECIALLY post Brexit and compared to the European average. The US, Australia, Canada are nowhere as reliant on their financial sectors as we are.

Tax-to-GDP in the UK is grossly overrated, London being a tax haven where it is shockingly easy to hide money and where speculation is the only industry.

The UK must be the only European country that still blames the pandemic for their current economic situation. If other nations have recovered from the pandemic by now and the UK hasn't, might there be another issue? One that's only affecting the UK? Now what could that be?

I repeatedly see data pointing to the same conclusion: the UK's government has been uniquely bad amongst major European nations at handling the Great Recession, the political turmoil of the Syrian Refugee Crisis, and the COVID-19 pandemic. In total, the UK seems to have had 15 years of failure relative to many other significant European nations. It's depressing to see, but hopefully things can turn around.

maartenaalsmeer The data doesn't point to all Britain's economic problems being solely attributable to Brexit, although many Europeans and those in Britain who supported continued membership of the EU like to say it does so they can say they were right all along.

The UK's economic problems were developing long before Britain's exit from the EU was even being discussed in the UK and are a combination of factors one of which is the 2008 Financial Crisis and to a lesser degree some elements of Brexit, while others are more recent developments/anomalies.

The only distinctly UK thing about the slowdown, as opposed to global macro, is that British industry had largely configured its structure and practices for optimal single market participation, and modifications have been costly, slow and often half hearted

The reason why Britain has stopped working is because of their conservative way of thinking British government people still think it’s 1800-1900s Britain when in reality it an island in need of massive reforms starting with the monarchy and ending with the food

The British people voted for Tory tax cuts, the British people voted for Brexit. So really the pain that  Brits are suffering is self-inflicted. Tax cuts mean cuts in public spending and increased borrowing but tax cuts always win votes. Also, Brits voted for Brexit because they wanted foreigners out, even at the expense of a ruin economy and destruction of the NHS.

One of the most disappointing things of the 21st century is how easily people are convinced to vote against their self interest. The information age was supposed to fix this, but it might have actually made it worse.

Let’s not forget that one of the biggest problems is the recirculation of wealth. The corporate system simply isn’t paying its workforce enough. There isn’t incentive for people to go to work, and for the vast majority of those that do, they don’t have enough disposable income to put back into the economy. And with so many industries looking to make staff cuts, this problem will only become more explosive, especially with the onslaught of AI replacements.

Idk how it is in the UK but in the US our corporate tax rate is really low, as is our capital gains tax, while wealth inequality is at a 100 year high. Yet we are 34 trillion in debt. Those taxes could be raised and they would almost only effect the wealthy. If the UK is similar than taxes can be raised, just not regular income tax, as billionaires dont make their money from normal income, average people do.

You are right. And the UK does have disastrous income tax regimes where you are paying 40% of your income towards taxes and contributions even if you've only moved slightly above middle class levels of income.

Brexit was deliberately unacknowledged and politically delayed for years by the opposition, and then when it was finally implemented it was launched right into a pandemic. It never had a chance. Britains woes are almost entirely non-brexit related.

What you are experiencing is decades of political mismanagement; a disregard for the age-population structure, mass-scale ethnic invas- immigration , the gutting of british industry (manufacturing/ tech), sanctions on russia that have backfired, money printing through problems (it's theft of wealth), and a mass exodus of skilled workers (either dying out or emigrating).

Maybe closing the loopholes that allow the super rich to avoid paying their fair share of tax, would be a start. Also, stop London being the money laundering capital of the world.

Wouldn’t “closing” the loopholes simply drive out all that foreign money from the financial sector? Then the UK would have nothing left since the financial sector is the only competitive thing they really have
